Toll Collector (Permanent Full Time – Graveyard)

Full Time Employee – Non Exempt
40 hours, Weekend Coverage
Starting at $14.52 per hour + $0.30 shift differential

 

DEFINITION:

The basic work function of all toll collectors is to determine the proper toll classification and collect bridge crossing tolls from vehicles; to keep records; and to provide appropriate customer service to bridge users.

The toll collector position is an essential employee position. Ability to report to duty during inclement weather is required.  The graveyard shift is specifically from 10:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Works under the supervision and direction of the Operations Manager.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (May include, but not limited to, the following):

  • Assigns appropriate toll classification to vehicles and collects bridge crossing tolls.
  • Prepares accounting of toll receipts from assigned shift.
  • Answers bridge crossing and general information questions, gives directions and distributes brochures and flyers to persons crossing the bridge.
  • Monitors vehicle movement across bridge, including oversized loads; communicates with law enforcement and medical service agencies regarding traffic problems, accidents, suspicious, or emergency situations; and completes accident reports for accidents occurring on the bridge.
  • Cleans and maintains the tool booth interior.
  • May prepare and maintain daily record of money collections and bridge crossing activity; maintain and order toll booth supplies; prepare end of shift reports; forwards payroll information to supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Basic math.
  • Columbia River Gorge attractions and their location or the aptitude to quickly acquire such knowledge.

Ability to:

  • Discern the proper vehicle classification category for collecting bridge tolls.
  • Accurately collect and account for monies collected, sometimes under a fast – paced  work environment.
  • Use cash register and electronic calculator.
  • Maintain a courteous disposition in working with the public, including the ability resolve  disagreements regarding proper toll charges.
  • Understand and apply all Port rules and procedures regarding the collection of bridge tolls, movement of vehicles across the bridge, and response to emergency situations.
  • Maintain accurate records and generate required reports.
  • Work alone and use reasonable judgment and logic in responding to situations which do not allow for contact with a supervisor.

 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A representative example of how the required knowledge and abilities could be acquired includes:

Training:

  • Sufficient education to follow written and oral instructions.

Experience:

  • Experience in handling money, working in a customer service setting, and working in a fast – paced environment.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Satisfactory completion of mandatory pre-employment drug testing.
  • Requires constant standing for long periods of time.  Requires frequent bending, stooping, twisting and reaching. Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Involves exposure to conditions where vehicle exhaust fumes may be present.  Involves some exposure to conditions where excessive, heat, cold, or wetness are present.
  • The classification is staffed 24 hours a day. Work is subject to varying shift assignments.  Work is subject to irregular rest and meal periods.
