New Improvements in the Marine Park

Fish Cleaning Station: The Port received partial funding from the Oregon Fisheries Restoration and Enhancement Act of 1989 to install a fish cleaning station near the historic locks. It is equipped with a cutting board, faucets and grinder. It will be located on the east side of the restrooms and functional by the first of June.

New Floating Dock: In May 2008 the Port of Cascade Locks received a matching grant from the Oregon State Marine Board (OSMB) for the replacement of the floating dock at the boat launch in the Marine Park . The OSMB is Oregon 's recreational boating agency, dedicated to safety, education and access in an enhanced environment. The contract was awarded to Dennis Snyder Jr. Contractors who coordinated the removal and installation of the new dock.

Beach Lighting: In preperation for the Moth Class World Championships to be held in the Marine Park Aug 6-18, 2009 the Port has installed three new parking lot lights to illuminate the parking lot and beach head near the marina.

Pacific Crest Park

The Port of Cascade Locks is currently working on plans to develop 40 acres of property located near the Bridge of the Gods. The new development will offer mixed income living, and stunning views. In addition, the Port is working with the US Forest Service to swap land around the Pacific Crest Trail with USFS owned property within the Urban Growth Boundary, but outside the National Scenic Area Boundary.

Historic Lock Tender Homes

There are currently many things going on in Marine Park.

The Port is looking to make improvements to one of the Historic Lock Tender Homes, thanks to a Preserving Oregon grant. This rehabilitation will include replacing siding that has been destroyed due to the strong Gorge wind and rain and other minor improvements as the money will allow.

The restoration of the front entrance porch to the Community Center is complete and the improvement is outstanding. The Port of Cascade Locks is committed to restoring the lock tender homes to their original architecture, beginning with the Community Center. Over the past year the Port has renovated the inside to repair electrical wiring, hard wood flooring, kitchen, bathrooms and windows. This summer the outside trim, and gutter system will be restored and historic siding will be restored on the west wall of the Community Center.

Marine Park Entrance

The Port is also working with the Oregon Department of Transportation on completing the engineering and permitting stage of the new Marine Park Entrance. The new entrance will offer separate vehicle and pedestrian access, creating a safe entry into the park. Basalt rock and other materials will be used to create an entrance that will be reminiscent of the Historic Columbia River Highway, which runs through Cascade Locks. The Port is very excited about this project and the impact it will have on Marine Park.

Cascade Locks Beach Improvements

Another exciting project the Port has in development is improvements to the beach and surrounding areas to better accommodate the Columbia Gorge Racing Association. The Columbia River at Cascade Locks has become one of the most desirable destinations for sailboat competition in North America . The location has the right wind speeds, warm temperatures, fresh water body and scenic beauty which are superior to other sites. By making some minor developments to Marine Park, sailboat racing in Cascade Locks will be able to expand and grow the community's tourism based economy. Below are some renderings of improvements to the beach area at Marine Park.

Cascade Locks International Mountain Bicycle (CLIMB) Trail System

It's been over a year of exploring the possibilities of a mountain bike trail system outside of Cascade Locks. Jill Van Winkle of (International Mountain Biking Association) IMBA and Chris Bernhardt of Alta Planning + Design have been the primary trail design contractors on this project. Funding for this project has been a joint effort of the Port of Cascade Locks , City of Cascade Locks and Hood River County .

Port Commission President Tim Lee stated that CLIMB is an exciting new project with a lot of potential, but these things take time, and it's only in the beginning stages. At best the trail is 3 years away from completion. Lee also stated that this project is worth the time and patience for the economic benefits it will bring to the community.”
